Ingredients for Slow Cooker Beef and Noodles

The first step in preparing this or any recipe is to read and understand the instructions. Next, gather all the equipment and prep the Slow Cooker Beef and Noodles ingredients. In culinary terms, this process is called “Mise en Place,” meaning “Everything in its Place.” Prereading the recipe and setting up in advance speeds up cooking and ensures familiarity with each step.

Key Ingredients

  • Chuck Roast – You’ll need 2-3 pounds for this recipe.  I prefer to cut it down before cooking because it makes it easier to shred later in the cooking process.

  • Beef Broth – Home-made or store-bought works fine.
  • McCormick Au Jus and Brown Gravy mix packages – They adds to the beef flavor and the gravy mix helps to thicken the sauce.  You can use plain wrap, however the flavor won’t be as intense.

  • Garlic – Because . . . it’s garlic, and garlic makes everything savory even better.
  • Essenhaus Amish Noodles (narrow) – You can certainly make your own noodles, or you can use these incredible Essenhaus Amish noodles.  I use the narrow variety.  Not for nothing, I don’t get paid to promote these noodles – they’re just that good.  They are available at most major grocery stores here in the Midwest, including Walmart.

How to Make Slow Cooker Beef Noodles

  • Making this recipe is really easy and centers around slow cooking the meat.  I prefer to cut the chuck roast into chunks.  That’s just a personal preference.  You can cook the roast whole but, in my opinion, it takes a bit longer to cook and it’s a bit more time consuming to shred the meat.

  • Spray the inside of the slow cooker with non-stick spray, then add the beef broth and the Au Jus mix.  Stir to combine.

  • Whether whole of in chunks, add the roast to the slow cooker.  Season the beef with Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper.  Cover the slow cooker and turn it on.  On high it will take about 4 hours.  If you’re going to work will be gone all day, use the low setting and it will be ready after 6 hours but can continue cooking through about 8 hours.  Either way, the aroma in the house will be most inviting when you come back home!

  • Shed the beef using a potato masher.  Really!  Using the masher, simply press and twist.  The meat will almost fall apart on its own.  If you don’t have a potato masher you can use a couple of forks to pull the meat apart.  It will be very tender and easy to shred.

  • Add the water and beef gravy mix, give it a good stir to combine then add in the noodles.  Make sure the noodles are evenly distributed in the gravy.  Cook for 10-12 minutes until the noodles are cooked through.  Stir occasionally while the noodles are cooking to make sure they cook evenly.
  • Stir one last time and serve.
